Event brings tasty barbecue to Parker

For an affordable and fun Labor Day weekend, the Smokin’ Brew BBQ is the place to go. The event is Sept. 2-4 in the parking lot of Parker Station in downtown Parker and with more than 14,000 people attending last year, the event is making its mark in Parker.

The Smokin’ Brew BBQ is a free event providing a wide range of barbecue food to the public and the opportunity for barbecue chefs to show off their talents during a Kansas City Barbecue Society-sanctioned competition and the Rocky Mountain Barbecue Association Cup event. People can also enjoy live music throughout the weekend, from bands including The Indulgers, Catfish Kray Blues Band, The Blues All Stars and Sugarhouse.

Courtney Howey is in charge of vendor services and said this year tons of people were interested in judging the competitions, so much so, that there’s a waiting list.

“We do a judging class in February and after that class, we already had 70 people signed up to be a judge,” she said. “People just love to judge. It’s a lot of fun, and it is pretty interesting.”

Back this year as vendor favorites are the Golden Toad out of Littleton and Backdraft BBQ catering company. Howey said those two were extremely popular last year, selling out of food the first night.

“Last year during happy-hour opening night we underestimated how many people would attend and some of our vendors ran out of food and had to restock that night before the next day,” she said. “But we have diverse vendors to accommodate everyone who attends. So although you can get some of the best barbecue at the event, sometimes some people need something different.”

The Smokin' Brew BBQ was created in 2009 as a fundraiser event by the Cherry Creek Valley Parker Rotary Club of Parker. Howey said the event is a nonprofit with all of the money toward clubs and organizations in need.

“We disperse the money we make to many organizations,” she said. “We have given money to the Parker Task Force and we have been able to fund projects in the community through this fundraiser.”
