5A boys lacrosse: Midfield strong for Ponderosa

Posted

Ponderosa lacrosse has a mix of experience and youth this season.

But with the personnel returning, there’s playoff knowledge and a strong core.

Once again under coach David Zazzaro, the Mustangs return from an 8-8 overall record last season. They were fifth place in the Douglas County League and reached the Sweet 16 of the state championship playoffs. They were eliminated 10-6 where they lost to Arapahoe 15-6.

“Team has an experienced midfield, but is young on defense, in the goal,” Zazzaro said.

With the coach, six returning starters are back this season including senior Tyler Sandt. Sandt is a first-team all-conference midfielder who was also an all-state honorable mention.

Kyle Shefferly and Austin Laliberte, also in the midfield, were all-conference honorable mentions.

Garrett Butler returns to start on defense, while Joey Meier and Brett Kopasz are back on the attack.

Another Mustang to keep an eye on this season is Jake Doyle. Doyle was injured most of the season last year. This season, he serves as a team captain.

Although Castle View looks to be most improved, Zazzaro said, the coach expects Chaparral and Highlands Ranch to be the league’s most explosive competitors in 2011.
