A 5.5-acre park that honors the men and women who work to keep the community safe will formally open Aug. 17.
A grand opening celebration for Deputy Zack S. Parrish III Memorial Park, at 2020 Fiddle Road in Castle Rock, begins at 11 a.m. and includes hot dogs, face paintings, giveaways, s'mores and more. Burly Brewing Co. will serve a special beer just for the event, Phenomenal Brew.
The town's newest neighborhood park features two play boards and horseshoe pits, and a memorial has been built to honor Parrish and public safety personnel.
Parrish was killed in the line of duty while responding to a disturbance call on Dec. 31, 2017. He served with the Castle Rock Police Department before transitioning to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
The public overwhelmingly voted to name the park in his honor and pay tribute to his sacrifice, along with the work of all police officers and firefighters. Lighted steel columns, a reflective garden and a glowing blue concrete band are just some of the memorial features that will pay homage to public safety personnel.

Among those who will be at the dedication are Castle Rock Mayor Jason Gray, Castle Rock Councilmember Kevin Bracken, Castle Rock Police Chief Jack Cauley and Castle Rock Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Brauer.
