A Chaparral High School student who allegedly brought a gun to school in his vehicle faces possible prison time.
Markkus DeHerrera, 19, was taken into custody May 14, just days after the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was tipped off about a weapon in his vehicle in the school’s parking lot. He faces a felony charge of possession of a weapon on school grounds, a class 6 felony, as well as a misdemeanor count of unlawful conduct on public property. He was released on a $3,000 bond shortly after his arrest.
The sheriff’s office also charged an unidentified 16-year-old boy with misdemeanor harassment; it is not clear if he is a student at Chaparral.
Investigators say a school resource officer for Legend High School passed the tip on to police. A knife was found in two separate vehicles at Legend the same day the sheriff’s office responded to Chaparral.
Public information officers would not go into detail on what might have transpired if authorities had not intervened except to say that there was “never a plot or credible threat to damage any school or harm any students at either school.” However, they did say that the incidents were “related to circumstances that occurred outside of the school.” It is unclear if charges have been filed against either of the Legend students.
The sheriff’s office said it found guns in the vehicle at Chaparral, but did not specify what kind or say whether they were loaded. DeHerrera is set to appear at a hearing at the Robert A. Christensen Justice Center in Castle Rock at 1:30 p.m. June 21.
The school district did not immediately respond to e-mailed questions regarding DeHerrera.
