Letter to the editor: Douglas County school candidates deserve support

I, along with so many others, am excited to support Becky Myers, Christy Williams, Kaylee Winegar and Mike Peterson for Douglas County School Board. This past year has opened my eyes to the influence the school board has in our community, and how important it is to have a board that puts kids first. These four candidates will head our school district in the right direction by doing just that — putting kids first.

They will be transparent, accountable partners with the community. In part, that means listening to families and advocating for safe in-person learning, not deflecting that leadership to others.

They will focus on academics, not activism. Only half of students in DCSD are grade-level proficient in reading and math — we must do better than that. These four candidates will restore the focus on academic excellence in our classrooms by reflecting the values of Douglas County, not injecting the politics of Washington, D.C. This approach will empower teachers to help each child reach their full potential.

They will restore balance to this school board. Diversity of thought means the board will more fully represent Douglas County families. A 6.4% year-over-year decline in DCSD enrollment at the time of the annual student count in October 2020, almost double the Colorado average, is a sign that school board balance is desperately needed.

We can become a destination school district once again with the help of great school board leaders. Myers, Williams, Winegar, and Peterson will put kids first, preparing them to succeed in life, which helps our whole community flourish.
