In regard to Douglas County’s (and other entities’) quest for water: can anyone remember and say Two Forks Dam? Thanks to former President George H.W. Bush’s early 1990s decision to deny the authorization of dam and reservoir construction on the South Platte River, Douglas County is/was considering sucking the lifeblood out of farmers in the San Luis Valley. If construction of the dam and reservoir had been authorized, the reservoir would now be full, Douglas County would have sufficient water to supply the county’s needs well into the future, farmers in the San Luis Valley would continue to supply us with food (think tasty cantaloupes!), and there would still be sufficient Colorado water in the South Platte River to meet Nebraska’s required quota.
