Recall drive seems pointless
It is difficult to understand the Douglas County School Board director recall election effort. The district will have to pay $250-350K for an election when just four months later (whether or not a recall election is held), FOUR OF SEVEN BOARD MEMBERS ARE UP FOR ELECTION IN NOVEMBER (i.e., control of the board). So why is this being done except to throw a hissy fit? Even if the people behind the recall effort are upset at directors who are not up for reelection until 2023, they can gain control of the board in the normal course of the democratic process just a few months later, without costing the district hundreds of thousands of dollars and sparing everyone multiple heated elections within a few months. Can anyone provide a legitimate reason why the recall proponents can’t wait four more months? Particularly as the sole reason apparently for throwing this fit is how the board handled the pandemic, which will not be an issue by summer when a recall election would be held if their petition is successful. It would be nice to have a break from political fliers clogging the mailbox and doorways and simply adhere to the normal election processes.
