Running just comes naturally to 18-year-old Charlie Barenberg,
of Parker. It’s easy for him to get outside and run sprints or long
distances. His talent was put to the test during the 2010 Special
Olympics USA National Games in Lincoln, Neb. and he passed with
flying colors.
Barenburg, who has some learning disabilities, earned four
medals in the four track events he competed during the Special
Olympics in July. He placed first in the 5-kilometer run, second in
the 4x100-meter relay, third in the 1,500 meters and fourth in the
3,000 meters. This is his third year competing, and his best so
far.
“It felt really good when I won those events and to get those
medals,” he said. “I felt really good doing it, and this year was
my best year.”
Barenburg prepared for weeks before the Special Olympics by
running everyday. He did long runs and sprint work at a track. He
got some extra help and support from his coach Rick.
“He keeps me running everyday, and if I’m not running he wants
me to get back on the running,” he said.
Barenburg’s favorite event is the 5k. He likes it because of the
longer distance.
“I like running because it takes off all the troubles I have
been having, and it gets rid of all those tough time I have been
having,” he said.
Barenburg, who graduated from Chaparral High School this year,
is attending Pickens College in Aurora for landscaping. He said he
likes getting his hands dirty.
“I like to work with all the different flowers,” he said. “The
poinsettia is my favorite.”
