A Parker teenager is collecting toys, books and puzzles for the elderly, the ill, veterans and students with special needs.

Nicole Steiner, a 17-year-old student, recently won a microgrant from Karma for Cara, a nonprofit that promotes service and youth engagement in the community.

Steiner is using the money to collect and distribute these items to assisted living facilities, cancer centers, veteran associations, classrooms for students with special needs and Ronald McDonald Houses Charities. So far, 3,400 people have received games and books as a result of her efforts.

When Steiner was young, her mother became bedridden after an accident. Games helped her family focus on fun while spending time together. This inspired Steiner to help others in similar situations.

K4C's microgrant program encourages youth volunteers 18 years old and younger to apply for funds that support their community service ideas. The program donates between $250 and $1,000 to microgrant winners.

In addition to collecting the toys, books and puzzles, Steiner serves as Colorado's ambassador for National Child Awareness Month.
