When Mike Coffman ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in
2008, he faced a crowded field of contenders in the Republican
primary. Colorado’s former secretary of state emerged with a
healthy margin of victory, before easily besting an outmatched
Democratic opponent with 60 percent of the vote.
This time, Tom Tancredo’s replacement in the 6th Congressional
District faces a tougher challenge from the Democrats in John
Flerlage.
Coffman and Flerlage, who both served in the Marines, have
expressed similar views on a number of topics, including the
promotion of a better business climate for the private sector. One
area they differ is on federal health care reform legislation, with
Coffman opposed and Flerlage in support.
The 6th Congressional District consists of all or parts of
Douglas, Arapahoe, Elbert, Jefferson and Park counties. It is a
staunchly conservative, and largely wealthy, district that remains
unlikely to elect a Democrat to represent it any time soon.
But Flerlage has mounted a very active challenge, putting forth
a strong grassroots effort. The airline pilot and Jefferson County
resident also is an active community member. He, however, lacks
political experience, a disadvantage in a race against the seasoned
Coffman.
In his first term, Coffman has been a passionate proponent for
tackling the national debt and balancing the budget. His experience
and conservative values fit well in this district.
Colorado Community Newspapers endorses Mike Coffman in the 6th
Congressional District.
