'Save' group doesn't meet deadline for additional signatures

The citizens committee seeking to zone two downtown properties to open space did not meet the Nov. 1 deadline to gather an additional 1,700 signatures for each petition asking voters to put the properties' zoning up to a special election. That effectively ends the group's bid to stall development on the two properties.

The group originally turned in its petitions Oct. 9, each with about 4,000 of the needed 5,373 valid signatures. About 1,400 signatures were deemed invalid by the town clerk, either because the signer was not a town resident or not a registered Parker voter. The petitioners had 10 days past Oct. 22, when the town announced both petitions were insufficient.

The town agreed to sell the Pine Curve property, the 24-acre lot at the east end of downtown, to UDC Miller in August. That sale has not closed yet. The second property, PACE Lot 2, the strip of land north of the PACE Center, has not yet been sold.
