Junior Katie Dack-Howell has been a catcher the past three seasons for the Rock Canyon softball team and is finally getting comfortable with her leadership duties.
The catcher who attends Lutheran High School has a lot of physical responsibilities, but she also has had to be a leader to make sure everybody in the infield is aware of the situation and the outfielders are in position before a pitch.
It took a while to develop the necessary leadership qualities.
“I've improved a lot mentally, like leading and all that stuff,” saidd Dack-Howell. “It was hard. It took some getting used to. I came in as a freshman and there were seniors playing in the field and I'm directing them. That was kind of weird. As time went on I got used to it. I like being a leader, seeing what everybody does and encouraging people.”
Dack-Howell's leadership is visible this season in the Continental League statistics as she leads many of the batting categories.
“The ball doesn't seem any bigger,” said Dack-Howell. “Everything just slows down at that moment. I see the ball and hit it.”
After 16 games, Dack-Howell led the Continental League in batting average (.600), home runs (nine), slugging percentage (1.380), RBIs (37) and on-base percentage (.683).
`She is the 100% package since she came in here on day one. She is an extremely capable player As a leader she is more calm, her presence is better and she does a better job of relating to her teammates and getting them to play at their best.'
